Message from the BC Seniors Advocate

National Indigenous Peoples Day – June 21, 2025

National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day are opportunities to honour the rich heritage, diversity and strength of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples across Canada.

I recently met with people in Nuu-chah-nulth territory, including Elders, and it was my honour and privilege to listen to their stories, share time and create connections.

I am committed to continuing to build relationships with Indigenous communities and Elders throughout B.C.

The Office of the Seniors Advocate works on behalf of all older people in B.C. to improve the services, programs and supports available to seniors and is working to increase our understanding of ageing as an Indigenous person in our province.

This is a time to reflect and an opportunity to listen, learn from and engage with Indigenous cultures throughout B.C. I encourage everyone to take time today, the longest day of the year, to join the many events honouring Indigenous histories, languages and traditions.

As we enjoy the warmer weather and the many opportunities it brings to spend time in nature, let us reflect on the first people who lived here and cherished these lands throughout generations. We are grateful to all Indigenous Peoples who have cared for and nurtured the lands and waters around us for all time.

With gratitude and respect,

Dan Levitt
