As we move into the fall season, I want to take a moment to thank all of you who continue to engage with the work of our office. Whether it’s reading our reports, sharing your experiences, or participating in our surveys, your input helps us advocate for improvements about the issues that matter most to seniors and their families.

I am heartened by the public reception of our most recent systemic review, From Shortfall to Crisis: Growing Deman for Long-Term Care Beds in B.C. released in late July. This report, which examines supply and demand in our province’s publicly-funded long-term care system, has resonated strongly with British Columbians. I know many of us see ourselves, families members and friends reflected in the caregiver stories that informed the review. Thank you to everyone who took the time to read the report.

If you haven’t already, I invite you to read our newly-released 2024/25  Annual Report. My first fiscal year as Seniors Advocate was both eventful and productive, with the release of three major reports, two province-wide surveys and meaningful engagement with thousands of seniors, caregivers and seniors’ services providers across the province.

I am particularly proud of the impact my office’s information and referral team has on the lives of seniors. Our toll-free line is staffed by a small, expert team who help seniors and caregivers navigate services and connect with local supports. Some of their work is profiled in the Annual Report. If you have questions or concerns about seniors’ services or issues, I encourage you to call 1-877-952-3181 or email info@seniorsadvocatebc.ca.

Last month, I had the privilege of attending the annual Elders Gathering for the second time. It was an honour to speak with so many Elders, hear their wisdom and learn about the unique challenges and strengths of older adults in Indigenous communities in B.C.

Looking ahead, I will be at Union of BC Municipalities convention this September, where I look forward to meeting with local leaders and hearing about their challenges and ideas on how to build more accessible, age-friendly communities and other issues of concern.

Sincerely,

Dan Levitt
