February 2026 Message from the Seniors Advocate
As we move into February, I would like to share key updates from my office that highlight both progress and growing pressures facing seniors in British Columbia.
First, our Long-Term Care and Assisted Living Directory has been updated with 2025 data. This searchable, online resource provides standardized information on publicly-subsidized long-term care homes and assisted living residences across the province, helping seniors and families make informed decisions about care options.
However, this new data highlights an urgent and growing issue. B.C.’s seniors’ population is increasing much faster than long-term care and assisted living capacity. Since 2019/20, long-term care beds have increased by just 5%, while the number of seniors 65+ has grown by 19%. Our province will need 16,000 more long-term care beds over the next decade, yet there is still no plan to meet that demand. Without immediate action, waitlists and wait times will continue to grow, placing unsustainable pressure on seniors, families and the health-care system.
I would like to remind everyone that during the winter months, many older adults experience increased isolation, particularly those living alone or with limited mobility. As we approach Family Day, it is a timely reminder of the importance of staying connected, whether through family, friends, neighbours or community supports. Social connection plays a meaningful role in both physical and mental health and small efforts to check in can make a real difference.
Finally, I would like to thank the OSA Council of Advisors for their engagement during our recent meeting. Council members shared valuable perspectives and concerns based on their experiences and work in communities across the province, which continue to inform and strengthen the work of my office.
Sincerely,

Dan Levitt
