As we move into the summer, I want to reflect on June and share a few updates from our office.

The first week of June was BC Seniors’ Week and it was a privilege to visit communities across the province to celebrate and recognize the contributions of older adults. From Langley to Vernon, I met with seniors, caregivers, service providers and local organizations working every day to strengthen supports for older adults. These conversations help ensure that seniors’ voices continue to shape our work.

We also recognized World Elder Abuse Awareness Day last month, a time to raise awareness about preventing and responding to elder abuse and neglect. I want to thank the many organizations that support seniors’ safety, as well as the seniors who are willing to speak out and share their experiences. Their voices help shine a light on issues that are often hidden.

As we head into the summer months, I encourage everyone to take advantage of the warmer weather and enjoy time outdoors. However, with rising temperatures and potential for wildfire activity in the province, please continue to take precautions during heat events. Stay hydrated, check in on neighbours and loved ones, and follow local guidance on air quality and wildfire safety. This is also a good time to review emergency plans and make sure medications and important documents are easy to access if needed.

I also encourage people to learn more about the Health Care Needs Home Care campaign to eliminate home support co-payments for seniors. No one should have to choose between essential care and other basic needs. Please consider contacting your MLA to help advocate for change.

My office will be taking the summer to gear up for upcoming systemic reviews and continue our work to improve programs and services for seniors across the province. I will also be travelling to northwest B.C. to meet with seniors and community organizations in Terrace, Kitimat and Prince Rupert. I look forward to hearing directly from older adults in these communities about their experiences, concerns and ideas for strengthening supports for seniors.

Thank you for staying connected with us and for the important work you do in your communities.

Sincerly,

Dan Levitt,
BC Seniors Advocate
