August 2026 Message from the Seniors Advocate

This month, I am pleased to share our 2025/26 Annual Report which highlights our continued focus on listening to seniors, examining systemic issues, and advocating for improvements to programs and services affecting B.C. seniors. I urge you to read the report to learn more about the work of our office and the issues we will continue to focus on in the year ahead.

A key part of my role as BC Seniors Advocate is meeting with older adults and hearing directly about their experiences. Recently, I travelled to northwest B.C. to meet with seniors, caregivers and community organizations in Kitimat, Prince Rupert and Terrace. These conversations provided valuable insight into the strengths of local communities, as well as the challenges living in rural and remote areas. Thank you to everyone who took the time to meet with me and discuss issues important to older people. Your voices will continue to inform the work of my office and strengthen our recommendations to government.

Although every community is unique, many of the concerns I hear are shared by seniors across the province. Whether in a rural or urban area, older adults want to age with dignity, remain in their homes and neighbourhoods, and have access to the supports they need when they need them. Seniors and loved ones can also contact their MLAs, as their provincial elected representatives, to share their experiences directly and advocate for improvements.

As we continue through the summer months, I encourage everyone to take precautions during periods of extreme heat and wildfire activity. Please check in on older family members, friends and neighbours, stay informed about local conditions and make sure emergency plans, medications and important documents are up to date and easy to access.
