As we enter the month of July, we find ourselves at the midpoint of the year, a great time to look forward to what’s ahead. I hope this message finds you well and making the most of the summer season.

Last month, I was honoured to celebrate BC Seniors’ Week with people in communities from across province, from the Comox Valley to Delta to Penticton, and then up to Fort St. John and Dawson Creek in northern B.C. Thank you all for the warm and generous welcomes. It was a privilege to spend time with so many inspiring seniors.

I would also like to express my appreciation to the many seniors who participated in our Seniors’ Week #SpotlightOnSeniors social media campaign. Your photos and stories showcased the strength, wisdom and diversity of older adults in B.C. Thank you for sharing them so generously. The stories are posted on the OSA X and Facebook pages for anyone who missed the posts.

As we enjoy the sunshine and warmer weather that summer brings, it is also important to be mindful of summer weather events. Many areas of the province are experiencing heatwaves, drought and wildfires and it is important for seniors and their loved ones to be prepared for an emergency. Seniors can be more at risk of heat and smoke related health illness and need to take precautions.

I recommend taking the time to make a plan with friends and family that includes knowing potential hazards, identifying safe places to go in the event of an emergency, transportation options, as well as where to find reliable information about weather conditions and alerts.

Finally, reminder to people from the Kootenays that I will be visiting the area during the week of July 15 and holding town halls in Castlegar, Nelson, Fruitvale and Grand Forks. I would be happy to see you there to share about the work of the office and hear your concerns. Please check our website for more information.

Yours sincerely,

Dan Levitt
