May is a time of transition and I encourage seniors and caregivers across the province to take a few important steps to stay safe and supported.

During Emergency Preparedness Week, May 3-9, take a moment to connect with loved ones and review or create a plan to ensure you have what you need in case of an emergency. I also encourage people who qualify to renew their coverage under the Canadian Dental Care Plan to help maintain good oral health. Remember that coverage must be renewed each year.

It is also the time of year to apply for the Property Tax Deferment Program, which can help ease financial pressures for eligible homeowners. While the program terms changed as part of the last provincial budget, it remains an option for seniors who need some financial relief. We recommend applying immediately after you receive your property tax notice.

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to meet with fellow seniors advocates from across Canada to discuss shared priorities and challenges. These conversations are invaluable as we continue working to improve supports for older adults.

I also met with my Council of Advisors to discuss the findings of our recently released Monitoring Seniors Services Report and hear about priorities for seniors in their communities. I would like to thank them for their ongoing input and support.

As we look ahead, I’m excited for Seniors Week, June 1-7, a chance to recognize the contributions of older adults in our communities. I will be traveling throughout the Okanagan to celebrate with seniors, families and communities.

With the warmer weather beginning, I encourage you to get outside, stay active and enjoy all that spring has to offer, whether it’s a short walk, time in the garden, or connecting outdoors with friends and family.

Wishing you a safe, active and enjoyable May.

Yours sincerely,

Dan Levitt
