In October I had opportunities to connect with seniors at events recognizing National Seniors Day and Ageism Awareness Day. Hearing seniors share their experiences reinforced the importance of challenging assumptions about ageing. Ageing is inevitable. Ageism isn’t.

I would also like to thank our Council of Advisors as we welcome five new members and say goodbye to five whose terms have ended. To our departing members, Sandra Gebhardt, Lynn Wood, Diana Leung, Caroline Alexander and Pauline Gobeil, thank you for your time, thoughtful advice and commitment to improving the lives of older adults in B.C. Your contributions have helped inform our work, and I am grateful for the perspectives you have shared. I welcome our new members, Vicky Stickwood, Lisbeth Donaldson, Kim Slater, Kanwarjit Sandhu and Bonnie Urquhart, and look forward to working with them.

As B.C. transitions to a new government following the provincial election, I look forward to continuing to raise the issues that matter to older adults. Access to health care, long-term care, affordable housing and home support are essential to seniors’ quality of life. Ensuring the experiences and needs of seniors are heard will remain an important part of our work.

November is Fall Prevention Month, and a reminder that many fall-related injuries can be prevented. Staying active, maintaining strength and balance, reviewing medications with a health-care provider, and addressing hazards at home can all help reduce the risk of falls. Access to education and appropriate supports help older adults remain safe and independent.

As we look ahead, I remain committed to ensuring the voices of seniors are amplified to government and their experiences help shape the services and supports they need to live with dignity, independence and connection. Thank you for being part of this work.

Sincerely,

Dan Levitt
