Update on B.C.’s Property Tax Deferment Program
The Province has announced changes to the Property Tax Deferment (PTD) Program starting in 2026. The new rules apply only if a homeowner chooses to defer their property taxes in 2026 or later years.
What’s Changing
- Deferred taxes from 2026 onward will charge compound interest at Prime + 2%.
- Property tax balances from 2025 or earlier are not affected and will continue under the previous interest rules.
- Homeowners do not need to repay their full balance to decide whether to defer future taxes.
Automatic Renewal
If you are enrolled in automatic renewal, your 2026 taxes may be deferred under the new interest rate unless you opt out.
You can opt out through your eTaxBC account or by calling 1-888-355-2700. If you do not want your 2026 taxes deferred, it is best to opt out before June 1, 2026.
Why the Property Tax Deferment Program Is Important
Some seniors are understandably concerned about these changes. However, the Property Tax Deferment Program remains an important tool to help seniors with low incomes manage rising costs and stay in their homes.
